In this article, we describe ongoing work to restore saltmarsh ecology at two Mass Audubon properties—Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary and Barnstable Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. This restoration work, carried out in collaboration with multiple partnering organizations, is part of Mass Audubon’s goal to protect and steward resilient landscapes. One particular aim of these two restoration efforts is to enhance habitat for nesting Saltmarsh Sparrows. Sea-level rise caused by climate change has made the marsh nesting sites of these sparrows increasingly vulnerable to tidal flooding and habitat loss. Below, we describe each site, list collaborators and funding sources, outline the work being done and its timeline, and note the next steps we plan to extend our marsh restoration work.
