Birding the Merrimack River Floodplain in Concord, New Hampshire

Pamela Hunt

Concord locatorNew Hampshire’s capital city, Concord, straddles the Merrimack River, and local birders are blessed with multiple areas to access the river and some of its rich floodplain habitats. Many of these have been conserved by the city or local conservation organizations and allow some degree of public access. This article highlights Horseshoe Pond and other productive hotspots in Concord clustered off three exits along Interstate 93 (I-93) as it follows the river from floodplains and pine barrens in the south to Sewall’s Falls just north of the city.
