Photo Essay: Birds of the 27th MARC Report

American Flamingo by Peter Trimble
This American Flamingo at Dennis Chapin Beach was seen by many on July 15, 2024, which marked its second visit to the state, having made a brief foray into Massachusetts in early June. It is believed to be one of many flamingos entrained by Hurricane Idalia in 2023 that ended up in 18 states with some lingering into 2024. Photograph by Peter Trimble.

Anhinga by Jeremiah Trimble
This Anhinga was discovered on June 29, 2024, at Burrage Pond WMA, Hanson, by a group conducting a breeding bird survey. Though it marks the third record for the state, it is the first with photographic documentation. Photograph by Jeremiah Trimble.

Scopoli’s Shearwater by Jeremiah Trimble
The MARC reviewed 23 records of Scopoli’s Shearwater for the 27th report, including this bird seen at Race Point, Provincetown, on August 19, 2017. As is evident in this photo, the best way to separate this species from Cory’s Shearwater is the extent of white shown in the outermost (10th) primary feather, which needs to be at least 20% white.
