WEATHER

January 2024 was a cloudy and wet month. There were 16 days of precipitation with a total of 7.64 inches of rain in Boston, making this the fourth-wettest January on record for the city. Historically, Boston’s wettest January was in 1979 with 10.55 inches of rain. Snowfall in Boston for the month totaled just 9.1 inches versus the historical average for January of 13 inches. The winter’s first nor’easter arrived January 6 with gusting winds and heavy wet snow. Central and western Massachusetts recorded as much as 15 inches of snow, while Haverhill and Tyngsboro in eastern Massachusetts recorded 18 inches of snow. Boston recorded just four inches. Torrential rains followed this storm and melted the snow. Hopkinton recorded 4.8 inches of rain, Duxbury 4.5 inches, Springfield 4 inches, and Boston 2.8 inches. A nice stretch of mild weather in mid-January saw an average of nearly 49 degrees in Boston over several days, with a high of 60 degrees on January 13. A snowstorm January 28–29 dumped over eight inches of snow in Ashby, two inches in Haverhill, and less than an inch in Boston.
